A blockage that affects the whole building behaves differently from a single blocked fixture. When flushing a toilet backs water up into a shower tray, or the lowest drains in the building overflow while upper fixtures still run, the restriction is downstream of everything, in the building drain or the sewer lateral.

Underground lines fail for reasons that repeat: fine roots entering at joints and thickening over years, bellied sections that hold standing water, offset joints from ground movement, and older pipe materials that lose structural strength.

Symptoms

Signs this is the right service

  • Several fixtures backing up at the same time, starting with the lowest
  • Waste water appearing at a floor drain or gully when a toilet is flushed
  • Air bubbling in a toilet bowl when a bath or washing machine empties
  • Persistently soft, sunken or unusually green ground along the line's route
  • Sewage odours outside the building near the run of the lateral

Methods and scope

Which method applies depends on what the system is doing, the materials involved and the condition of the pipework.

Main line clearing
Access through a cleanout allows a main line cable or jetting head to reach the restriction. Clearing restores service; the inspection that follows explains why it happened.
Camera inspection and locating
A drain camera records pipe condition, and a sonde locator marks the depth and position of a defect on the surface, so any excavation is targeted rather than exploratory.
Root management
Roots are cut back mechanically, but they return through the same opening. A lasting fix addresses the joint or section that let them in.
Repair methods
Damaged sections are addressed by open-cut replacement or by trenchless methods such as lining or pipe bursting where the pipe's condition, route and surroundings allow.
Cleanout access
Where no accessible cleanout exists, adding one makes every future inspection and clearing faster and less invasive.

Process

How the work is sequenced

  1. Establish the pattern

    Which fixtures back up, in what order, and what triggers it, because the pattern separates a branch problem from a main line problem.

  2. Relieve the backup

    The immediate priority is stopping waste entering the building and restoring basic drainage.

  3. Inspect the line

    Camera survey from the cleanout records the condition and identifies the defect type and its distance along the run.

  4. Locate and mark

    The defect position is located above ground before any repair option is priced.

  5. Set out the repair options

    Clearing, lining and replacement have different lifespans and different disruption levels; each is explained against what the camera found.
